ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Come Christmas Eve, it’s no surprise to see the malls packed with people trying to get that perfect gift at the last second, but elsewhere, people were trying to pay for something else.
At Help Bail Bonds downtown, the phone rings off the hook this time of year.
“People want to get their loved ones out and see them and have them in their house you know and not in jail for the holidays,” said Grenko.
Grenko said she sees a spike in business during this time every year. So much so, it sometimes doubles.
“That’s there Christmas present basically is to get out of jail,” said Grenko.
Grenko said unfortunately, DWI’s and domestic violence calls also tick up during the holidays, meaning more people need their help.
“People like to go to holiday parties and you know intoxication and fighting with one another,” said Grenko.
Lastly, she said people often call to try and clear any warrants in case they get pulled over on the way to grandma’s or because they know cops will find them at home celebrating the holidays.
“It’s a big amount, about 75 percent of my calls are warrant calls,” said Grenko.
In the end, Grenko said for them it’s not about making an extra dollar, it’s about lending a helping hand.
“You get to have them with their families and help them actually get to be with their loved ones,” said Grenko.
