Suspect in custody after stealing truck with owner’s son in vehicle

ALBUQUERQUE – A suspected car thief is in custody Thursday after a short search.

Bernalillo County sheriff’s deputies say a truck owner was warming up their vehicle near Rio Grande and I-40 Thursday morning when two suspects saw their chance to swipe it.
One suspect dropped the other off in front of the truck and took off. The other suspect jumped in the truck but didn’t expect what happened next.

The homeowner’s 26-year-old son saw the truck being stolen, ran outside and jumped in the bed of the truck in an attempt to stop it.

The son stayed in the bed of the truck giving police an update on where they were headed. The truck finally slowed down near San Pedro and Osuna where he jumped out.
Deputies and police set up a perimeter and shortly found the suspect, 33-year-old John Bowker.

Bowker has an extensive record including identity theft, forgery and receiving and transferring stolen vehicles.
