TAOS, N.M. (AP) – New Mexico State Police have released the name of a man who was fatally shot by Taos County Sheriff’s deputies in a domestic violence last week.

State Police say Robert Martinez died at a hospital after Friday night’s incident.

They say when Taos police were called to the scene, Martinez was wielding a long gun.

Police say Martinez refused to drop the rifle or obey commands, repeatedly swore at the officers and told them to shoot him.

Investigators say two sheriff’s deputies eventually discharged their weapons at Martinez.

The deputies and two Taos police officers were put on paid administrative leave at the shooting while the incident was being investigated. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
