ALBUQUERQUE (AP) – GOP presidential candidate Marco Rubio has named an up-and-coming Latina Republican as his New Mexico state chairwoman.
The campaign announced Tuesday that Rep. Monica Youngblood will chair the GOP presidential hopeful’s New Mexico operation. It is the first step in building a ground game for the Cuban-American Republican in the nation’s most Hispanic state, and one of the first 2016 presidential campaigns to set up shop in New Mexico.
Youngblood, an Albuquerque realtor elected to the New Mexico House in 2012, says Rubio understands the challenges facing the state’s low-income and middle-class families.
Youngblood is part of a GOP effort to recruit more minority candidates and was named a “rising star” by the Republican National Committee last year.
New Mexico’s GOP primary is scheduled June 7.
