ROSWELL, N.M.(KRQE)- Women in one New Mexico city are putting their old purses and handbags to good use. They’re filling them with things that homeless women and low-income teenage girls could really use.
Items like deodorant, razors and soap are often taken for granted by most New Mexicans but mean a lot to a homeless woman or a disadvantaged teenager. One group in Roswell is giving it to them along with a purse to keep it all in.
“I felt that disadvantaged teenagers and homeless women are sometimes overlooked and this is a way that women can empower women,” said Jeneva Martinez, who started the project.
It all started when Martinez challenged each of her girlfriends on Facebook to fill up an old purse with the items. Since then it’s blown up.
Martinez says in ten day, she has collected over 200 bags. Her nonprofit group, Embrace, have already given out 75 bags.
“We’ve got about, close to over 100 that we will still need to be put together, so we can get out into our community,” said Martinez.
The bags are also filled with a things like feminine hygiene products, scarves and gloves, even makeup.
Martinez went a step further, asking those who donate to leave a little note of encouragement in the bag as well.
People in Roswell say they love the idea.
“I think it’s a great idea, it would be a good think to give to some homeless women,” said Marybeth Agwood, Roswell resident.
What the group says they really need now is more items to put in the bags.
