ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – For the second consecutive game, the University of New Mexico Lobos fall short trying to close out a basketball game. The Lobos were outlasted 83 to 78 in round one of the Diamondhead Classic in Hawaii Tuesday.

Lobos guard Elijah Brown scored a career high 33 points while guard Cullen Neal dropped in 21. The Lobos started fast with red hot shooting but would cool off before the half. Auburn’s Kareem Canty would make them pay as he started to find his range on his way to 27 points. The Lobos trailed by five at the end of the first half 41-36.

The Lobos would come out in the second half on a 17-6 run only to watch it all slip away. Canty, with his team up one, drained a three point bucket with 26 seconds left to put the Tigers up by four points. The Lobos never recovered, throwing away the ensuing possession.

It was one of 22 turnovers. The loss drops the Lobos to 7-4 while Auburn improves to 6-3. The Lobos will play BYU in the losers bracket of the Diamondhead Classic Wednesday at 12:30 mountain time. The Cougars lost in overtime to Harvard 85-82.
