Court of Appeals upholds conviction for woman who aided in murder of couple

Casslyn Welch

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The court of appeals has upheld the conviction of Casslyn Welch, the woman who helped two prison escapees kill a tourist couple in New Mexico.

Welch was sentenced to 40 years in prison for helping three prisoners escape from the Kingman Prison in 2010 and then helping two of them, including John McCluskey and Tracy Province, during the carjacking and murder of Linda and Gary Haas near Santa Rosa.

The Haas were on vacation from Oklahoma.

Welch argued that prosecutors broke an oral promise of a 20 year prison sentence. Prosecutors say no such promise was made.

The appeals court ruled only the written plea agreement can be enforced. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
