LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) — A Las Cruces woman whose 16-month-old son was shot in the eye with a BB gun three months ago has been charged with negligent child abuse.

Las Cruces police say a grand jury indicted 21-year-old Yessika Ordunez on a felony charge Thursday.

They say Ordunez was charged for negligently allowing her toddler to be in the custody of her 30-year-old boyfriend, who had been drinking alcohol and firing a BB gun near their mobile home.

Authorities say the man isn’t the boy’s father and also is facing child abuse charges.

Police were dispatched to the couple’s home on Sept. 30 and say the child was found bleeding from his right eye.

The boy was taken to a hospital and has been in the custody of his paternal grandparents since October. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
