Thieves steal truck from Albuquerque car dealership on Thanksgiving morning

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – For many Thanksgiving is a day to celebrate with family and friends but for three people in Albuquerque it was the perfect day to commit a crime.

“Because it was Thanksgiving they figured nobody was going to be here, so it was a good time,” said Sun City Motors Salesman Ricardo Alvarez.

Thursday morning while many people were getting their turkey in the oven three people had a different plan, setting their sights on Sun City. Staff showing up at the dealership at Central and Virginia early Thursday morning to a find one of their trucks had been stolen right out of their lot. At first they thought it must have happened overnight but their surveillance cameras tell a different story.

Alvarez said, “Daylight, it must’ve been about 7, 7:30.”

A seemingly good time to go unnoticed in this neighborhood but someone was watching, the cameras, capturing clear images of the thieves and their truck. They pull up to a gate and in one quick swoop back right in. They’re on what looks like a well-plan mission, with a very specific target.

“The guy just walked to the truck in a second,” said Alvarez.

The truck was a red 2004 supercharged Chevy Silverado. The video shows the thief open the door, and almost instantly, the truck was gone.

They left behind a mangled gate. Alvarez says he only needed one look at it to know what happened.

“I see the doors big open”, so I got close and I’ve already figured it out. The lock is broken, the door is broken,” said Alvarez.

He says unfortunately the theft doesn’t surprise him.

“I feel sorry for them because eventually they will pay,” said Alvarez.

The truck is worth about $11,000. The dealership says they usually have all of their gates blocked by vehicles but they had let their guard down. Now they hope you will recognize the thieves and call APD. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
