ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE)- UFC Bantamweight Champion Holly Holm calls her latest journey “blessed.”
If she was not willing to take a what some considered a risk, Holm would know nothing of her new journey which has completely changed her world.
“I would not have experienced this if I didn’t give myself a chance to try.” said Holm, “So I hope that anyone is inspired, take a little leap of faith in themselves and try something.”
Holm knew after she knocked out Ronda Rousey to claim the title in UFC 193 would change her life forever. She just was not sure how much.
“I knew I would be more recognized after the fight,” said Holm. “I didn’t think that it would be like zero to a hundred.”
Holm knows a few things about the limelight. She was a World Champion boxer but, Holm never experienced anything that has come her way after shocking the world with a victory over Rousey.
She has been on a whirlwind media tour since the next day of the fight. When talking about the change Holm said, “It’s a crazy place and it’s a crazy schedule, fast pace, fast pace, run here, run there, going from one place to the next and while you are in the car you are doing a phone interview on your way to the next media thing that you are doing.”
Her fan base has grown tremendously and celebrities are among those in the mix.
“I met Jay Z and he says this is my wife,” said Holm. “I say ‘Oh hi what is your name?’ That is what I do when I meet someone’s wife. As I am shaking her hand, I am thinking why did I just say that. Jay Z is asking me about the fight and I cannot even focus on what he is saying because I just put my foot in my mouth. I have to interrupt him. I say ‘I am really sorry.’ I go back to Beyonce and say ‘I can’t believe I just did that.’ She goes, oh no. It’s fine.”
Holm is in the process of renegotiating her UFC contract and looks forward to returning to the octagon.
“I want to be a good champion and I am looking forward to defending the belt,” said Holm. “I am focused on that.”
It is still going to take a lot of training. Holm credits her coaches, teammates, family and friends for her success. She also gives credit to the state she calls home.
Holm wants them all to remember her as the Holly who left for the biggest fight of her life and not the superstar who will return.
