Elementary school raises money for Officer Webster’s family

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) –  Elementary school kids in Belen had a surprise for the Albuquerque Police Department in honor of fallen Officer Daniel Webster.

Students at Rio Grande Elementary have been very busy gathering pennies and other change as part of their annual fundraiser.

It’s usually pennies for patients, but this year they voted to donate the money to the family of Officer Webster.

After presenting the check, they learned more about being a police officer.

They even got to see their own principal, Margaret Manning, handcuffed.

“We are a low economic community and they brought in pennies, anything they could. [They] had parents donating. So for a free and reduced lunch school, that was awesome,” said Manning.

Officer Tanner Tixier says the department has seen an outpouring of support.

“This is amazing. We saw the outpouring of support from ABQ community, but the fact that we’re getting this support so far south in Belen just goes to show so many amazing people in this world,” said Officer Tixier.

The hashtag #WeAreAlbuquerque has quickly grown since Officer Webster’s death.

The kids at Rio Grande are now proudly displaying “We Are Belen” on their marquee.
