Volunteers help remodel Rio Rancho veteran’s home

RIO RANCHO, N.M. (KRQE) – It will be a lot easier for a veteran to move around his Rio Rancho home thanks to a troop of volunteers.

The Military Order of the Purple Heart, along with Home Depot, dispatched a team to give the veteran a home makeover. They replaced carpet, built a new porch and much more.

The veteran, Thomas Winfrey, lost his leg while in the Navy making it hard for him to work on his own home.

“It’s hard to get out here and maneuver around, moving rocks and taking out stumps, because you don’t have as much power as you used to have and I get tired pretty quick,” Winfrey said.

Winfrey said he wants to join these volunteers the next time they help a veteran.
