ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The Menaul Panthers basketball program just got a lot taller. Six-foot-nine Michael Ou is a new student from south China. He landed on the Panthers doorstep by word of mouth.
“We have a sister school there and an old player actually told him to come,” said head coach Gary Boatman. Boatman thought Ou was only six-foot-five, that was until he actually saw him.
It was a nice surprise for the coach especially since Ou can play every position on the floor.
“I come to America to dunk,” said Ou. Boatman was very complimentary when talking about the 16-year-old sophomore. “He’s definitely solid at the post. He has got good moves. He has got a good feel for the defense and he can score,” said Boatman. “He is working on his jump shot but, it’s not horrible. He can dribble. He might be, well he is one of our best dribblers.”
Boatman said you can expect to see Ou bring the ball at times this season. Ou says he likes to play like his favorite NBA player, Kevin Durant.
“He can play everything,” said Ou. The Menaul Panthers finished last season at 16-12, making the state tournament. They open the new season November 20 when they host Mesa Vista.
