ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – UNM Hospital is launching a new commercial, starring a famous actor who plays a native New Mexican.

“Grandma Sherry was a nurse at the UNM emergency. She saw me, smiled and shook her head. She’s been patching me up ever since,” Edward James Olmos says in the commercial.

It looks like a scene out of a movie. It isn’t until you reach the end that UNM Hospital is mentioned.

“UNM Hospital has always been there for our family, just like the horses and the land,” Olmos says in the commercial.

“It is about the generational connection between ourselves and this community,” said Billy Sparks, Executive Director of Communications and Marketing for UNM’s Health Sciences Center.

Sparks said UNM Hospital spent about $150,000 filming its new commercial in a canyon north of Socorro.

It is part of its “Life Stories” campaign although, Olmos, recognized for his roles in movies like “Stand and Deliver” and “Selena,” is playing another role in the commercial.

“He’s from L.A.,” Veronica Martinez said, immediately recognizing the famous actor. “I know him most because he was an East L.A. kind of guy.”

However, the star factor can be an attention grabber.

Even without it, people who didn’t recognize Olmos, liked the commercial for other reasons.

“I like how they had the whole different generations to understand how UNMH came to be,” Dakota Meza said.

“I like the parallel between the land and the hospital, too. It’s really nice,” said Lindsey Trout.
