City employees honored at Friday’s Hero event

Fridays Hero

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – An Albuquerque firefighter was named Friday’s hero for saving a woman from her burning car while off duty.

The woman’s car and an SUV collided at the intersection of Indian School and Tramway in July. Her engine burst into flames.

Firefighter Mark Giardetti was driving home from vacation with his family when he saw the crash. He rushed and pulled the woman out and then helped her passenger who was also stuck.

Friday he was honored for his actions.

Also honored Friday were two Open Space employees.

Cesar Aredondo and Samuel Garcia spotted a fire in the Petroglyphs and not only alerted Albuquerque Fire Department, but also grabbed their shovels and started to put it out.

That fire was extremely close to homes and businesses. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
