Drive-by shooting in Española sends 8-year-old to hospital

ESPANOLA, N.M., (KRQE) – Española Police said an 8-year-old boy was shot outside the Vista Del Rio apartments Sunday night during a drive-by shooting.

Neighbors in the area tell KRQE News 13 they heard a lot of yelling before they heard gunshots Sunday night, but it wasn’t until Monday morning they heard a little boy had been caught in the crossfire.

“They’re always out here playing,” Chris Shahin said. “I just heard bang bang bang, about five or six times, but I stayed inside.”

According to police, the call came in about 9:30 p.m. When police arrived they found the boy outside with a gunshot wound to the shoulder.

Police said officers pulled over a white Lincoln Navigator just blocks away. They arrested the driver, 27-year-old Aaron Archuleta, and three female passengers.

Police believe the shooting is a result from a fight that took place earlier in the day involving the boy’s mom and one of the women found with Archuleta.

“It’s a call that no officer wants to attend especially when it’s a shots fired call and actually a child has been hit,” Detective George Martinez said.

Police were able to locate the gun they believe Archuleta used in the shooting. They also found two other guns not too far from the scene.

The boy remains at the hospital, his injuries are non-life threatening.
