City Council to consider Indigenous People’s Day

Indigenous People Day

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Albuquerque could soon officially recognize Indigenous People’s Day.

The city council is set to consider a resolution Monday night that would acknowledge the holiday. It would be on the same day as Columbus Day.

Last month, Council President Rey Garduno attempted to make the change through a proclamation. When some councilors didn’t agree, he called them “cowards,” but he later apologized.

If approved, Albuquerque would join cities in several other states recognizing Indigenous People’s Day. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
