Jackson Winkeljohn Academy opens doors to the community

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE)- The JacksonWink Academy held its grand opening today, opening its doors to the community of New Mexico. There were several hundred fans in attendance that had the chance to take a full tour of the new facility. That includes a walk through the dorms, medical facilities, the gym, etc.

Coach Greg Jackson was very excited to have this event on Saturday, saying it was almost overwhelming.

“For me it’s surreal, you know kind of crazy. Here we are in this amazing facility and I’m just a little white guy from the South Valley, so it’s kind of cool to be here,” said Jackson. “I can see an immediate difference with the fighters in this new space, just because we have everything you could need. How did we function without all this great equipment, so it’s a situation like that? We did function a long time without it, but now that we have it we are even better.”

Greg Jackson believes this gym is not only beneficial to his athletes, but the community in general. This gym really gives the fans of New Mexico a professional caliber sport to root for.

“Today’s grand opening is actually more about Albuquerque and New Mexico and the fans,” said Jackson. “It’s just saying hey thanks for supporting us. Thank you for getting behind us. We really don’t have a professional sport team here right, we have the Lobos which are great, but we don’t have a real professional sports team. We are the next best thing.”

The JacksonWink team has 3 upcoming title fights in the coming months, starting with Holly Holm. Holly is the heavy underdog in this bout with current champ Ronda Rousey, but Holly definitely seems determined. This woman has fought through a lot of adversity, including beating the dominant Anne Sophie Mathis in a rematch in her boxing career. “She hadn’t lost in I think 17 years. 21 out of her 24 victories were by KO, and one of those KO’s was me. So yeah that was a lot to overcome, but I did it”, said Holly Holm. Holly takes on Rousey on November 4th in Melbourne, Australia.
