ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Holly Holm is very aware that the biggest fight of her UFC career is only a couple of weeks away. The former boxing champion is an underdog to UFC Champion Ronda Rousey and she has been told on more than one occasion.
“Some people come up now even though I have the fight and say I will be thinking of you because she’s a beast,” said Holm. “I’m like, I am not going to a funeral guys.”
Holm has an undefeated 9-0 record. Rousey is 12-0. No fighter seems to be able to get out of the first round against Rousey, who has crushed her opponents in vicious fashion. Holm knows all about it and will not consider it a victory if she can just get out of round one. She has higher goals than that.
“I am not going in there to beat 14 seconds,” said Holm. “I am going in to win.”
Holm has the benefit of training among some of the best fighters on the male side of UFC.
Her teammates include Jon Jones, Carlos Condit, Donald Cerrone, Diego Sanchez and John Dodson just to name a few. Her gym, Jackson Wink Academy, is considered by some to be the number one MMA gym in the world. The gym bears the names of two of her coaches, well respected in the industry.
Greg Jackson and Mike Winkeljohn believe in Holly Holm.
“It’s going to be the biggest upset in MMA period,” said Winkeljohn. Twenty years ago when we started doing MMA out of Albuquerque people said where is that,” said Jackson. “They knew where we were when we left. That is kinda how it has always been.”
Holm will leave for Melbourne, Australia and UFC 193 next Friday. The fight is November 14.
