ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – An Albuquerque dentist is putting out a bounty on extra Halloween candy for a good cause.
According to a national study, Americans buy nearly 600 million pounds of candy for Halloween each year.
During the Halloween season, the average person eats about three pounds of the sweet stuff.
“Enjoy it, but just enjoy it in moderation,” said Byron Wall with Cosmetic Dentistry of New Mexico.
A good way to do that is by giving some of your candy away.
“We will give the kids a buck a pound for their candy up to $5,” said Wall.
It’s all part of the 9th annual halloween candy buy back.
Doctor Wall and his staff are inviting kids 14 and younger to cash in their treats on Sunday at his office on Montgomery NE near Louisiana.
All of the candy collected will then go to Blue Star Moms. Blue Star Moms is an Albuquerque non-profit supporting New Mexico troops.
“Those are thankless jobs,” said Wall. “They are in the world in terrible places putting their lives on the line for us. It’s just a way that we can give back.”
In 2014, Wall said his office collected more than 1,000 pounds of candy.
“It is crazy sometimes. The first year we filled up a flat bed pickup truck seven times,” he said.
The buy back event is from 12 to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
The Blue Star Moms will send the candy along with clothes and meals to the troops in holiday boxes in late November.
