New Mexico Air Force Major dies in helicopter crash

RIO RANCHO, N.M. (KRQE) – The Department of Defense announced on Tuesday that a New Mexico airmen was among those who died in a crash while in Afghanistan.

On October 11, a helicopter crash  occurred in Kabul, Afghanistan resulting in two deaths.

One of the deceased is from New Mexico. Maj. Phyllis J. Pelky, 45, from Rio Rancho was among those who died. Master Sgt. Gregory T. Kuhse, 38, of Kalamazoo, Michigan also died in the crash.

“We are grieving a deeply felt loss today,” said Lt. Gen. Michelle Johnson, Academy superintendent. “Our heartfelt condolences and prayers go out to the family and loved ones of Major Pelky and all those affected by this tragedy.”

The cause of the accident is being investigated.
