ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – An Albuquerque man said he caught a Bernalillo police officer driving dangerously down the interstate and he wants that officer’s boss to know.
Robert Trujillo said, Thursday, two officers were driving more than 90 mph down I-25 near Alameda. He captured video of one of the officers with his cell phone. He said he knows the officer was speeding because he tried catching up to him.
“I noticed that a police officer’s unit was coming in on the fast lane and he was coming at a high rate of speed,” Trujillo said. “So I moved over into the center lane to get out of his way.”
That officer was in a marked unit. He wasn’t using any lights or sirens.
“When I realized it was Bernalillo PD, I was like, ‘Wow this guy isn’t even in his county anymore, much less his town,'” Trujillo said.
Another unit followed, that’s when Trujillo took out his phone. He admits he too broke the rules.
“I was a little nervous that I was going to get in trouble,” he said. “I just wanted to show the public that they’re not following the same rules they’re there to enforce.”
Trujillo was on his way home from work right around 6 p.m.
“With the Balloon Fiesta traffic and everybody backed up, had anybody pulled into his lane, it could have been bad,” he said.
When KRQE News 13 reached out to the department to see what the officers were doing in town, the department said many of its officers live in Albuquerque. Chief Tom Romero said the department is now looking into the situation. He said if he finds the officer broke any rules, the department will take appropriate action.
Trujillo hopes that action will teach the officer a lesson.
“If he would have gotten into an accident it could have cost somebody their life or even his own life,” Trujillo said.
