BERNALILLO, N.M. (KRQE) – The Bernalillo County District Attorney will not charge a sheriff’s deputy who shot and killed a man.

Deputy Jeff Bartram pulled over Adam Padilla last December at Central and Unser for not using his turn signal. Then, the deputy thought Padilla was acting suspicious so he asked him to get out of the car.

In the audio recording, the officer can be heard repeatedly asking the man to turn around. Then, the sound of a taser and gunshots are audible.

Deputy Bartram says his taser didn’t work and then Padilla reached for his waistband for a gun. That is when he shot Padilla.

Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office says Padilla did have a loaded gun.

DA Kari Brandenburg determined the shooting was justified. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
