Eddy County participating in mental health program

CARLSBAD, N.M. (KRQE) – Eddy County is participating in a nationwide program to keep mentally ill people out of jail.

“Stepping Up” helps counties provide access to treatment and alternatives to people suffering from mental illness going to jail. A commissioner told the Carlsbad Current-Argus it’s a good networking tool to see how other counties handle mental illness in their jails.

The warden at the Eddy County Detention Center told the paper anywhere from 40 to 50 percent of people that come through the jail suffer from some sort of mental illness.

It is free for the county to participate in the program.
