SANTA FE (KRQE) – Surveillance video shows a scary armed robbery that left a cashier panicked.
Santa Fe Police want everyone to take a good look at the man in the video as they still work to identify and track him down.
“They’re usually busy,” said Anita Ortiz about the Wash Tub, a laundromat on Cerrillos Road near Rodeo Road in Santa Fe.
However, a robber targeted the laundromat when the attendant was alone just before it opened at 7 a.m. on Thursday. Surveillance video captured images of him after he handed the laundromat attendant a note, threatening to kill her if she didn’t give him money.
“The note was in Spanish, but the woman that spoke to him actually said he didn’t seem to speak Spanish,” Santa Fe Police Lt. Andrea Dobyns said.
That information has made Wash Tub regulars suspicious.
“I’m sure he staked out here,” Ortiz said. “The owners do speak Spanish, so I’m sure he’s been here.”
Police said the thief stole cash and the woman’s cell phone before making his getaway.
He didn’t speed off in a fast car though.
“It was a black BMX bike,” Lt. Dobyns said.
Police called medics to the laundromat when they say the attendant looked like she was having a panic attack.
Customers hearing the news for the first time on Tuesday said it is scary. “Before I felt safe, but now I’m going to be looking over my shoulder, making sure he doesn’t come back,” Ortiz said.
Even though the man covered himself up, police said video of him and even the clothes he was wearing is critical as they track him down.
“Even if we can’t recognize him, if we find him, we can identify his clothes with a search warrant,” Lt. Dobyns. “The videos really help us to make our cases.”
Police said they called the woman’s cell phone several times. No one answered.
Police said the woman witnessed the man reach into his pocket as if he had a weapon, ready to make good on his threat but police said no one was hurt.
