City of Albuquerque training employees to better help the mentally ill

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The City of Albuquerque has announced a new initiative to better help the mentally ill.

Albuquerque Firefighters will now take crisis intervention training to learn more about dealing with mental and behavioral health issues. Just like police officers, firefighters and paramedics interact with the mentally ill on a regular basis.

There’s been a lot of criticism about the handling of the mentally ill since the shooting death of James Boyd.

The city is working to boost training for all city workers who come in contact with the mentally ill. Not only will all cadets take the training, but so will all current employees. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
