ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – It’s no secret that during the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta prices in Albuquerque go up, whether you’re paying for a flight or a place to stay.
Hotel managers within the city said it comes down to supply-and-demand. During the nine-day event, demand is so good that hotels double, sometimes triple the cost of a room.
An estimated 800,000 people turn-out during the event, most of them visiting.
Some hotels told KRQE News 13 they try to maximize their rates and do everything they can to bring in tourists.
But catching a deal is not one of them.
Ritson Hunter, visiting from England, said he’s heard nothing but great things about the fiesta. But he’s not making flight reservations anytime soon.
“I think it’s a rip-off, a total rip-off” Hunter said. “Just because we’re tourists, no that’s not fair.”
And if you’re thinking of taking it up a notch, a balloon ride will cost you.
Rainbow Ryders is the only company allowed to take paying customers for a ride at the event. Throughout the year rides cost $159, during the event, expect to pay $429.
