New Mexico group heading to Philadelphia to see Pope Francis

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A large caravan of New Mexicans will be heading cross-country on a trip they’ll never forget. They’re going to see the Pope on his first visit to the United States.

Nearly 300 New Mexicans are hitting the road in a caravan on a nearly 2,000 mile road trip to Philadelphia where Pope Francis will arrive on Saturday.

Jose Vernier, his wife Lourdes and their children will be making the trip with the group. The couple organized it for Saint Therese Parish in the North Valley and other members of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe.

The highlights of their trip will be taking part in the “World Meeting of Families” congress which the Pope will be attending and a once in a lifetime chance to see the pope in person, and feel his presence.

The group will spend the weekend in Philadelphia then head back here to Albuquerque on Monday. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
