Accused murderer found hiding in New Mexico

Evelyn Mackey

RUIDOSO DOWNS (KRQE) – A Florida man accused of murdering his wife decades ago has been found hiding out in New Mexico.

US Marshals believe 72-year-old Merl Mackey killed his wife Evelyn in Levy County back in 1981. Evelyn disappeared after her daughter went to school.

This week Marshals tracked Mackey to Ruidoso Downs, where he’s allegedly been living for years.

Officials say Mackey was known to collect money for the Wounded Warriors Program in front of the Walmart there, but they don’t believe he was doing a good deed. Officials think he was pocketing the cash.

Mackey is being held in the Lincoln County Jail awaiting extradition to Florida. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
