Failed Craigslist transaction leaves family without car and part of home

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Ashley Contreras was wide awake with her boyfriend and 5-week-old son when this car came crashing into their home.

It all started when a man put up his car for sale on Craigslist and when he met up with the buyer, everything went awry.

“The person buying the car showed with a large amount of cash, the person selling the car actually robbed this individual of his money,” said Officer Simon Drobik.

The seller also took the car with him. The buyer chased him with his own car with the suspect firing shots at him. Eventually the suspect crashed into Ashley’s home.

“Just heard a huge bang, just tried to get the kids out of the house because the house was filling with smoke, so just freaking out and panicking,” said Contreras.

The crash totaled Ashley’s car and destroyed her son’s bedroom.

Ashley’s just grateful her son wasn’t harmed but not having one of their cars will just add more stress.

“I mean, getting to work and kids to school, and there’s three different schedules to accommodate now with one car,” said Contreras.

Although the suspect held up someone else, Ashley says she feels she was robbed too.

“We had our two cars, we had our home and everything, and someone literally came, smashed through, and took it,” said Contreras.

Police are still looking for the suspect. No description was released. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
