Roswell Roasting meme pokes fun at school shooting

ROSWELL N.M. (KRQE) – A picture posted on a Facebook page poking fun at the Roswell school shooting has left many people offended.

A Facebook page called Roasting Roswell posted a picture with the caption “Berrendo Middle School supply list.” It displays normal school supplies and then includes a bullet proof vest.

It’s been a year and half since Mason Campbell fired off a shotgun blast in a packed gymnasium, seriously injuring two students.

“That stuff’s not funny anymore,” said Chad Chappellin, parent of a BMS student.

The school district does not find it funny either.

Roswell independent schools district superintendent, Tom Burris, says the joke is in very poor taste.

“To have somebody post something like that is offensive, it’s irresponsible, cold and callused. I don’t understand why somebody would want to do something like that,” said Burris.”

The school wants to know who is behind it.

“If we can figure that out we certainly will. I will be talking to police officers. I’m sure police officers have already seen this. This again, it’s not funny, it’s not humorous. It’s nothing that this community needs,” said Burris.

Comments came flooding in on the post. One comment says, “Those thinking this is funny were obviously not the ones on the outside praying their children, family, friends were safe.”

The people behind the page fired back saying “This is Roasting Roswell, if you can’t handle the roasts you’re in the wrong page.”

Joe Muse, the grandfather to a Berrendo Middle School student, compares the page to a Keith Bell cartoon.

“It is a roasting page. If I saw the same thing in one of Keith Bell’s cartoons it wouldn’t offend me. I can understand why some people would. I don’t think it’s funny, but I don’t take offense to it,” he said.

Police say while they find the post in extremely poor taste, it’s not a crime so there isn’t much they can do.

The superintendent says that the post was actually brought to his attention by a teacher at Berrendo Middle School.
