Man convicted in fatal 2009 shooting at Albuquerque eatery

ALBUQUERQUE (AP) — The last suspect in a fatal shooting at an Albuquerque restaurant six years ago has been convicted on a felony murder charge.

Federal prosecutors say 31-year-old Francisco Melgar-Cabrera also was found guilty by a jury Thursday in the armed robberies of two Albuquerque restaurants in June 2009.

They say Melgar-Cabrera could face life in prison on the murder conviction and up to 20-year sentences on the robbery convictions.

Melgar-Cabrera was arrested in El Salvador in September 2013, but wasn’t extradited until May 2014.

By that time, his three co-defendants had pleaded guilty in the cases and been sentenced to prison.

A 34-year-old woman who worked as a cook at a Denny’s restaurant was fatally shot during an armed robbery on June 20, 2009. A steakhouse was robbed seven days earlier. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
