ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Friends of the firefighter who died while climbing in the Sandias over the weekend are working to fulfill his dream.

Bryan Conkling was a longtime firefighter and paramedic for Santa Fe County. His dad says he always dreamed of setting up a foundation for paramedics and first responders who suffer from post traumatic stress disorder.

His father says Bryan was deeply affected after more than two decades of responding to unspeakable tragedies and knew many others were affected as well.

Now friends and family have set up a foundation called Healing the Healer’s Heart. They ask people donate to the cause as a way to honor Bryan.

This can be done at any First American bank in Albuquerque or Rio Rancho. The Rio Rancho branch is at 3002 Southern Boulevard. In Albuquerque, there are First American banks at 8110 Ventura Street northeast and 4301 25th Way northeast.

Meanwhile, state police say while searching for Conklin they found the body of another hiker. They believe it is 70-year-old James Whitehead, but are still waiting to confirm the information. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
