ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The search continues in the Sandia Mountains for a missing climber. The team is looking for 40-year-old Bryan Conkling who failed to return after a weekend trip.

At about 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, police were notified about the missing hiker. The search began shortly after Sunday night.

Friends say he is a paramedic for CareFlight in Albuquerque. Friends say Conkling was climbing near what’s known as the thumb.

Conkling’s girlfriend is the one who reported him missing. Friends are helping in the search and say they’ve found some of his rappelling gear and his sleeping area, adding to the fear he may have fallen and is hurt.

Officials say the rugged terrain makes for a difficult search and the vegetation limits aerial searches. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
