Roswell airport building undergoes demolition

Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated the airport was once part of the Walker Air Force Base. The airport was not part of the base, it was part of an Army Air Corps auxiliary airfield during World War Two. The story has been corrected to include this information.

ROSWELL, N.M. (KRQE) – A fixture that has been in Roswell for decades will soon be no more.

City councilors helped start the demolition of the old airport terminal building.

The facility which was built in 1949 has fallen into disrepair. The area was originally part of an Army Air Corps auxiliary airfield during World War Two.

Recently, the building has been used by nonprofits, but began to present a safety hazard.

A formal review for historic reasons had to be conducted before the demolition could begin.
