ARTESIA, N.M. (KRQE) – Police say a man is dead after a shootout with authorities in Artesia.
It happened at about 6 a.m.Tuesday when the Eddy County Sheriff’s Office along with the Pecos Valley Drug Task Force, Carlsbad Police and other agencies were trying to execute an arrest warrant at an Artesia residence.
Police say when they tried to execute the warrant on Feather Street, 47-year-old Michael Todd Evans started shooting at them. Officers shot back and Evans was pronounced dead on scene.
One special agent did sustain non-lethal injuries after being shot by Evans. Officials say the agent is expected to survive.
At this time, the agency that opened fire has not been identified.
State Police are now investigating the incident.
