Bicyclist struck, killed near downtown Albuquerque

Albuquerque Police Department

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Police say a bicyclist is dead after a crash Thursday morning. It happened at 5:30 a.m. at the intersection for Martin Luther King Avenue and Broadway Boulevard.

According to police, a driver was driving east on MLK Avenue with a green light. When the driver passed through intersection he hit the bicyclist. Police said the bicyclist ignored the “do not cross” signal and was attempting to cross the intersection. The bicyclist was taken to a hospital in critical condition where he passed away.

The Albuquerque Police Department is not releasing the bicyclist’s identity. They say the driver of the vehicle was not injured in the incident.

Speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash, police said.

APD says bicyclists and pedestrians do not always have the right of way and should follow the rules of the road. This is the second deadly bicyclist crash in three days. Police say both crashes were the result of errors the bicyclists made. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
