ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – An Albuquerque police officer who was shot in the line of duty was awarded for his heroism Thursday.

In January, Officer Lou Golson pulled over a stolen SUV on San Mateo. When he walked up to the driver, police say Christopher Cook opened fire, hitting Golson twice in the vest and in the hand and leg.

Golson had to learn how to walk again.

He received the New Mexico business coalition Hero of the Year award.

“It’s a great honor, didn’t expect it,” said Officer Golson. “It’s humbling. It really is and I’m proud also.”

Golson still has to undergo hip surgery, but is back at work.

He says he is working for the DWI unit. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
