ALAMOGORDO N.M. (KRQE) – An Alamogordo mother is livid after a school bus driver dropped her 6-year-old off in the scorching heat in the middle of nowhere. According to Alva Montoya, he didn’t belong on the bus in the first place.
Montoya was beside herself after getting a call from her son’s school last week.
They were letting her know her son Fabian was picked up on the side of the road by a bus driver who saw him walking on a street outside of town.
“He was walking from Airport Road, took off walking and ended up on a highway, walked down the highway the whole time,” said Montoya.
He was miles from home, walking in the heat.
Montoya says instead of Fabian getting on a van for an after school program, he was put on a school bus.
At the last stop, Montoya says the bus driver told Fabian it was time to get off the bus. So he did, but that was more than six miles from where his mother thought he was.
“Never once did they ask this little boy for a bus slip; he didn’t have a bus slip. He is six years old. This bus driver just literally had him get off the bus,” she said.
Luckily, another bus driver saw Fabian walking on the side of the road and picked him up. The driver took him back to North Elementary School and contacted his mom.
The school district says transportation of students to and from school is their responsibility even though they contract out their bus company. They are investigating and putting in procedures to make sure this never happens again.
Montoya also reported the incident to police.
She says when she tried to ask the company where her son was dropped off and where he was found they wouldn’t answer her.
“They treated me like I was just nothing, like I had no empathy from them, for a 6-year-old to be walking,” said Montoya.
KRQE News 13 called them as well and were told they had nothing to say.
Montoya is thankful her son is okay and knows the situation could have ended worse.
“My son’s life is priceless, but I would never want this to happen to any kid,” she said.
