ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Officials at the Central New Mexico Correctional Facility say officers found a homemade weapon in Andrew Romero’s cell.
Officers found the metal shank when they searched Romero’s cell after he threatened them.
At this time, officials are investigating how Romero got the weapon.
Romero is accused of killing Rio Rancho Police Officer Gregg Benner in May. He is currently serving an 11-year prison sentence for a series of probation violations while he awaits a trial for Benner’s murder which is set for next June. He is facing a possible sentence of life without the possibility of parole.
