ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – It’s a unique cultural event that kicks off the annual Fiestas de Santa Fe.
The burning of Zozobra is happening Friday, September 4th at Fort Marcy Park in Santa Fe. This is located just blocks away from the historic Santa Fe Plaza.
Zozobra, also known as Old Man Gloom, will be set on fire to help all those who contribute their glooms to him that their bad luck, sorrows, and unhappiness will disappear into the smoke.
Old Man Gloom is a well-crafted framework of preplanned and pre-cut sticks. Approximately 3,500 volunteered hours help to create it. Construction of Zozobra and staging of the event takes place within three weeks.
Covered in chicken wire and hundreds yards of bushels of shredded paper that usually consists of police reports, divorce papers, and paid mortgages help to ignite this man, releasing gloom stories.
