Man accused of threatening Las Cruces pastor with a knife

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) – A Las Cruces man is in custody for allegedly threatening a church’s assistant pastor with a knife.

Las Cruces police say 48-year-old James Bernard Wright is being held without bond on suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and unlawfully carrying a deadly weapon.

Police were dispatched to the Greater St. John Church of God about 9 a.m. Sunday.

The assistant pastor told officers that Wright allegedly had made a previously threat to cause damage to the church or harm worshippers.

He called 911 when he saw Wright outside the church Sunday and then went outside to tell Wright that he was not welcome.

Wright allegedly threatened the pastor verbally while wielding a knife.

Arriving officers say they found Wright near the church with a knife in his backpack.
