SANTA FE (KRQE) – The state approved $45 million to redo the highway from Los Lunas to I40 east of Albuquerque. The road is a common thoroughfare for people going to Grants or Gallup, but it’s a narrow two lane road in need of improvement.
The state will use the money to replace bridges, add shoulders, improve existing lanes and reconstruct curves.
The ultimate goal is to create a dependable bypass truckers can use to move goods through New Mexico.
Governor Susana spoke on the reason behind funding the highway improvements.
“We’ve been to Los Lunas several times ribbon cutting. Jobs, we are really excited for that and now have to make sure they have the tools, that’s good roads, to be able to move their commerce back and forth,” said Governor Martinez.
In addition to the regular Highway 6 drivers, state officials hope other drivers will take advantage of an alternate route if there’s a major accident in west Albuquerque.
The money for the project was allocated during the recent special session.
