Police: New details on officer-involved shooting in southeast Albuquerque

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Police have now released new information on Friday night’s officer-involved shooting. According to police, two officers shot and killed kidnapping suspect, Rafael Molina Jr.

It began on Friday when Albuquerque police received a call regarding a man seen forcefully shoving a female against her will into a black SUV at Robinson Park. Police officers located the SUV at the intersection of 8th and Silver. Officers attempted to stop Molina at 8th and Bridge where he appeared to be stopping, but then sped off.

During the chase, the female was able to jump from the moving vehicle.

After the vehicle was stopped, Molina attempted to flee his SUV. According to police, he pointed the gun at an officer as he attempted to flee.

Two officers, Cornel Heitzman and Carlos Hernandez, shot at Molina. He was later pronounced dead on seen.

Officer Heitzman is a re-hire who initially retired from the department at the rank of Sergeant. He has been back with the department since January 2009. Officer Hernandez has been with the department since January 2007.

The department is not releasing anymore information at this time.

It is unknown how many times the officers fired or how many times Molina was hit. According to police, it does not appear that Molina was able to fire his weapon.
