Carlsbad site reopening date set back further

WIPP

CARLSBAD, N.M. (KRQE) – Friday, the team working on recovery efforts at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant announced that a March 2016 reopen date is no longer viable.

The site near Carlsbad has been closed since February of last year following a radiation leak and truck fire inside one of the tunnels.

Teams have been working nonstop to clean up the site. While they say they continue to make significant progress, they have found more safety issues that need to be resolved.

The team has not said how long of a delay they’re looking at.
