Clovis cold case homicide suspect arrested

CLOVIS, N.M. – David Gutierrez was arrested Tuesday for the murder of Jose “Chico” Valverde.

Back in April 2002, Valverde was found deceased inside a boxcar he used as a residence in Clovis, New Mexico.

Valverde displayed massive trauma to his face and it was determined that he had been shot in the face with a shotgun. The incident was investigated as a homicide by the Clovis Police Department and a person of interest was identified.

In May 2011, a witness came forward and stated Gutierrez, 33, was responsible for an unsolved murder that occurred in a boxcar.

In June 2015, more interviews were conducted and more information was gathered.

The Major Crimes Unit conducted other interviews and an arrest warrant for David Gutierrez for an open count of murder was generated. During this period of the investigation, David Gutierrez was being held by the New Mexico Department of Corrections on an unrelated charge.

David Gutierrez is being held at the Curry County Adult Detention Center without bond.
