South Valley Descanso to be altered

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The Department of Transportation has decided that a giant Descanso in the South Valley does pose a danger and needs to be altered.

It towers more than 20 feet and includes three flag poles. It’s in memory of 25-year-old Alan Sanchez who drove the wrong way down Coors and hit an oncoming car; deputies believe he was drunk.

DOT says after looking at the Descanso, they believe it poses a safety hazard, not only because of its size but how it’s constructed. They say “this could be very dangerous for drivers.”

They say they will work with the family to modify it. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
