ABUQUERQUE (KRQE)- The death of Rio Rancho police officer Gregg Benner not only shocked the state of New Mexico but the entire nation. This event really hit the local law enforcement community hard, so they are trying to give back and doing so for Greg Benner.
Local law enforcement from across the state have teamed up with Julie Benner, Gregg Benner’s Wife, to have a charity football game called the Benner Bowl.
All of the proceeds will be going to the Benner family’s charity choice, which is 10-82, a charity that exclusively helps out police, firefighter, and all law enforcement families in need.
APD Officer Brian Johnson says it’s great to help out Benner’s family and the game really means a lot to the law enforcement community.
“It just kind of makes you reflect on life and like how the job is very serious and that there is no such thing as routine. If we can give back in any way to the family, because I can only imagine the devastation,” Johnson said. “You know someone coming home and the husband not being there for the family. Any way we can give back and in this case the football game.”
WHEN and WHERE
The Game will be on August 1st at Rio Rancho High School. The pregame festivities will begin at 6:30 pm and the game will kick off at 7:00pm.
“Well I will tell you what we have some good athletes on the field, and there is going to be some hitting and good physical football and that’s what it’s about. If your just a fan of football and also give back to the community. You know come support your law enforcement. This is a great opportunity to do that and enjoy a great football game”, said Johnson.
