Man arrested in Santa Fe jewelry theft

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Police have arrested a man accused of stealing hundreds of rare pieces of Native American jewelry from a Santa Fe woman.

Police say the suspect, Thomas Barka, is the husband of the manager of the Extra Space Storage Facility where the jewelry was taken.

He told police he sold all of the jewelry. So far, 20 pieces have been recovered. Police say that Barka said he made about $2,000. The jewelry was worth between $40,000 and $100,000.

Barka’s wife was alerted by some friends that saw the jewelry for sale online.

Police believe Barka had an accomplice, but his wife is not considered a suspect right now.

Barka is charged with three counts of burglary and one count of conspiracy. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
