Local semi-pro soccer teams ranked top five in league

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The United States women’s soccer team made history this past weekend by winning the world cup, local teams hope this victory helps residents notice their own local team.

The semi-professional soccer team here in the Duke City, Sol FC, was brought to the Duke City when Ron Patel and Larry Espinoza officially announced the come back on December 5, 2013.

Patel and Espinoza, both with a passion for the game, were introduced by a mutual friend who felt they could achieve the goal in securing a semi-pro soccer team for New Mexico.

Last year, in the inaugural season, Sol finished mid rank, while this year they are leading the Mountain Division of the Premier Developmental League (PDL). Sol has been ranked in the top five teams, out of 65, for several weeks.

Patel, general manager of Sol, accompanied by the attacking midfielder, Isaiah Madrid, and goalkeeper, Lucas Champenois, joined KRQE’s This Morning team Thursday to discuss the season and future plans. Watch above.
